BNP Chairman and Honorable Prime Minister Mr Tarique Rahman has inspected the 1,200 MW Matarbari Ultra-Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Plant located in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
According to the schedule, on Sunday (09 August 2026) at 10:45 AM, the Prime Minister arrived at the helipad of the Matarbari power plant by helicopter. He then proceeded to the project’s administrative building.
From 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM, the Prime Minister received a detailed briefing on the overall activities of the project. Officials concerned briefed him on the current status of the power plant, electricity generation and operational activities, production capacity, fuel supply and management, operational efficiency, maintenance, safety ব্যবস্থা, and related infrastructure. Future plans of the project were also presented.
During the briefing, the Prime Minister was informed that the Matarbari power plant is being operated entirely by local engineers and manpower. He expressed satisfaction and praised their skill and capability, encouraging them further. He also planted a neem sapling in the project area as a commemorative gesture.
The Matarbari power plant has a total generation capacity of 1,200 MW, consisting of two 600 MW units, and uses modern ultra-supercritical technology. The project also includes port facilities for coal transportation, power transmission lines, access roads, and other supporting infrastructure. The project has been implemented with loan assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
After the briefing at 12:15 PM, the Prime Minister visited various facilities and proposed project sites. At 12:29 PM, he inspected the site of a proposed 70 MW solar power project, where officials briefed him on its plans and potential capacity. He was also shown locations designated for a proposed LNG-based power plant, a metrochemical project, and a new refinery.
He further inspected LPG, LNG, and coal terminal-related infrastructure and proposed sites, gathering detailed information and providing specific guidance. Later, he visited the coal jetty, observing the deep seaport, LNG terminal, and various installations of the power plant.
The Prime Minister also visited the proposed temporary LPG jetty and sites designated for future coal power plants (Units 3 and 4). Officials presented plans and infrastructural details of these projects.
By 12:55 PM, he concluded his inspection and returned to the helipad, departing Matarbari by helicopter at 1:05 PM.
During the visit, the Prime Minister emphasized the efficient use of existing infrastructure to ensure energy security, transparency and accountability in project management, regular maintenance, and long-term integrated energy planning. He stressed the importance of diversifying energy sources alongside meeting the country’s growing electricity demand, while ensuring economic viability, environmental considerations, and long-term public interest.
He also highlighted the importance of integrated development of power, energy, deep seaport, and industrial infrastructure centered around Matarbari, noting that these would play a crucial role in ensuring energy security, industrialization, and overall economic growth.
The project aims to enhance stable electricity supply and strengthen energy security in the country. Alongside the power plant, port facilities for coal transportation, transmission lines, access roads, and related infrastructure form key components of this major project.
Among those present with the Prime Minister were Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Power and Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit, Security Advisor Brigadier General Shamsul Islam, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, Special Political Secretary Belayet Hossain Mridha, and others.
